Kenya - The Food

If you know me at all in real life or you've been reading this blog for long enough, you will be unsurprised at the content of the following post. Food is a big priority in my life. The food in Kenya was so awesome that A) it deserves a post of it's own and B) I actually put on weight eating it*.

I normally never put on weight. However I think I surpassed my previous records at pigging out during this holiday so it would be strange if I didn't put on weight. It is interesting to note that all of the Bride's numerous relatives who couldn't be bothered remembering my name knew me as The Girl Who Eats A Lot.

* I put on a total of 4kgs in 2 weeks. Thankfully since returning to Glasgow I've managed to lose it so I'm back to my normal self. Phew!

Breakfast was usually homemade pancakes with fruits and cream and syrup and/or omelets.
Then at the numerous wedding functions there was lots of delicious Indian food that would put the typical Indian restaurant to shame. This was the real deal. You can click on the pics to see them full-size.
Because you can truly appreciate the colours and imagine the taste when it's full-size.
The desserts were amazing too. Indian sweets are horribly bad for you (come on, deep fried in butter and dipped in honey and sugar?!) but they taste so damn good you just can't say no. For example we got served home made jelabi at one of the functions we went to. A chef dude was making them right under our noses. Wow!
The food at the lodge in Masai Mara was lovely too. It was a buffet so obviously going for second helpings was normal. I skipped a third helping as I wanted to leave room for dessert.I'd go back to Kenya just for the food. We had ostrich steak in Nairobi and that was pretty cool. Tastes just like....beef actually.
The street food was really nice too. We went to a place called Diamond Plaza in Nairobi and had this amazing Masala Chicken. Words fail. We also had a Parrot Fish at one of the restaurants we went to, again in Nairobi.
Speaking of seafood, Mombasa, being near the sea, obviously had a lot of great seafood restaurants. We tried one called Moorings and the place was magical. It was called Moorings because the restaurant was actually floating on a lagoon. You have to cross a rope-and-wood bridge to get to it and the wooden platform on which all the tables and chairs are laid out lurches slightly when you get on it. There is no roof overhead, just the starry sky. A slight breeze, the occasional wave gently lapping at the platform, the candlelight flickering and the sounds of crickets and seagulls. Beautiful.

As was the food. The lobster was to die for.
As were the jumbo prawns.
The calamari wasn't bad either (and by not bad I mean totally mouthwatering-ly delicious).
Phew. Apologies if you suffered hunger pangs and extreme salivation whilst reading this post. I did too whilst typing it. Yes I know it's rather sad to photograph food all the time but what can I say, it had to be done!

Scrump: Heh yeah some people think it's strange but hell, I think if a meal is nice enough it's worthy of being recorded so!

David: I'll take a suitcase if I could!

Gutterflower: Thanks! I like ostriches too, they're tasty! (ok ok I'll stop!)

Zlot: Heh yeah. Too bad you'd turn into a right fatso if you eat the way I do! :D

Pseudorandom: You should indeed! I reckon it will work like a charm :)

Chaarmax: Consider this punishment with interest for those HBC pics you posted!

Indyana: True, that's a very apt way of describing it!

N: Are you impressed or shocked at my eating capacity? :D

Dili: Heh I WISH I could cook food this good!
